IN 2001 YOU DO NOT DUMP YOUR GARBAGE IN A LAKE

"Can anyone believe it is possible to lay down such a barrage of poisons on the surface of the earth without making it unfit for all life?"
--Rachel Carson

Adams Mine is actually a lake which has formed out of the abandoned pits of a surface iron ore operation.

The pit is 55 stories deep and is sunk 300 feet into the watertable.
The pit is situated in badly fractured rock on the height of land
overlooking a rich farming belt.

THAT IS WHAT GORDON MCGUINTY AND MIKE HARRIS WANT TO DO AND IT IS WRONG.

In the best case scenario it will mean the contamination of 300 million litres of groundwater every year for 100 years. This represents the yearly amount of groundwater that will have to be pumped from the mine after becoming contaminated with leachate and chemicals.

What's the worst case scenario? If the experimental design of this massive pit fails, contamined groundwater could leach out through the various fractures resulting in the contamination of groundwater aquifers downstream of the mine.

In defeating the plan using the city of Toronto Temiskaming residents have written thousands of letters protesting the plan. Numerous demonstrations have been held.
Northern Ontario politicians have fought against it. Toronto finally said no it is not environmentally responsible but Gordon McGuinty is pushing the plan now to other southern cities including KINGSTON, NAPANEE and KITCHENER

Canadian cities need to work at diversion and recycling. GORDON MCGUINTY AND MIKE HARRIS have decided to use the residents of Temiskaming as unwilling hostages in an unproven gamble.

But we say the groundwater of Northern Ontario is too precious to risk. The Adams Mine dump must be stopped.
